Inspired by the notion of controlled chaos, the Sam Sam is perhaps my most organic design to date. As a designer, I am driven to create products that make the lives of the modern user clearer, easier, more efficient, and I feel the Sam Sam is a visual depiction of this effort. Sam Sam relies on a method of joinery that demands no intensive labour or high degree of technicality. While construction of the Sam Sam requires some customisation of the materials, the raw quality of common items such as rubber washers and dowel makes for a design that is unpretentious and entirely functional. The piece encourages the modern user to offload their articles in the same way that a collection of sticks are inclined to collapse toward the floor. However, by means of unique construction the Sam Sam is able to translate the mundane process of ‘offloading’ into an act of adornment.
